🔴 LIVE - Your Window To Val d’Isère - The Night after Fete du Vieux Val!!! ❓Is this an uninhabited village? Quite the opposite! Val d’Isère is one of Europe’s busiest ski resorts and becomes a very lively place during the winter season, which usually runs from late November until early May. The summer season is much shorter and mainly centres around the French school holidays in July and August. The quieter periods are May and June, then again from September until mid-November. Only around 1,500 people live here permanently year-round, so during the interseasons the village can feel surprisingly calm. May is especially quiet, partly because there always seems to be another bank holiday and many locals use the time to recover after the busy winter season. But once winter arrives, Val d’Isère turns into a true “ski city”. During peak weeks, more than 90 percent of the resort’s roughly 30,000 guest beds are occupied. ❓Where exactly are you located? Val d’Isère sits at around 1,850 metres above sea level in the French Alps, more precisely in the Haute Tarentaise Valley in Savoie. We’re actually very close to the Italian border — much closer if you’re hiking than if you’re driving! If you continue through the village and follow the road further up the valley, you eventually reach the Col de l’Iséran, which at 2,764 metres is the highest paved mountain pass in Europe. The road usually reopens around mid-June after the winter snow clearances, and that’s when the village starts becoming busier again with summer tourists, cyclists and motorbike tours passing through. During the winter months though, Val d’Isère is effectively a snowy dead-end road high in the mountains. ❓Why does the live stream change every day instead of staying on the same video? When I first started the stream, I let it run continuously for several days. The problem was that once I stopped the stream, YouTube often struggled to process and publish the replay properly afterwards. That meant some really impressive snow storms never became available to watch back on the channel. After a bit of experimenting, I found that around 12 hours seems to be the safe limit for YouTube to reliably process and publish a live stream replay afterwards. So these days I usually restart the stream roughly twice a day to make sure the recordings are saved properly and can still be watched later on. ❓ Why is there no audio on the live stream? French privacy laws are much stricter about recording audio than video, especially in public places. A scenic webcam showing a village or mountains is generally fine, but once you start broadcasting live audio, you can accidentally capture private conversations from people walking nearby. To keep everything simple, respectful and legally safe, the stream is video-only. Occasionally I may briefly turn on the microphone for things like the church bells, but in general I prefer keeping the stream as a quiet “window into Val d’Isère” rather than a live public microphone.
