In this new episode of The History of Arda, we tackle one of the most fascinating and controversial issues in J.R.R. Tolkien's entire legendarium. In The Silmarillion chapter "Of the Coming of the Elves and the Captivity of Melkor," we discover the awakening of the Firstborn at Cuiviénen, the War of the Powers against Melkor, and the beginning of the Great Journey to Valinor. But behind these events lies a question that would haunt Tolkien throughout his life: the origin of the Orcs. Were the Orcs really Elves captured and corrupted by Morgoth?
