They Were Building a Metro in Athens. What They Found Redesigned Every Station.

In 1992, construction crews in Athens began digging a new metro system for the 2004 Olympics. They hit archaeology at every station along the route. More than fifty thousand artifacts were pulled from the ground spanning twenty-five centuries. Instead of removing the ruins, the stations were redesigned around them. Today passengers walk past ancient cemeteries behind glass walls, look down into a river that has been flowing beneath the city since before recorded history, and wait for trains beside the bones of the Athenian plague dead from 430 BC. Somewhere between two stations, a tunnel boring machine was abandoned in the ground because it was too large to remove. It is still there. Hope you find it as interesting as I do!
