On the night of December 7, 2018, around 12:30 a.m., inside the Lanterna Azzurra nightclub, during a Sfera Ebbasta concert, someone sprayed pepper spray. In panic, the crowd of young people headed for the exit, using the only available escape route: a narrow ramp connecting the club to the parking lot. During the escape, the side balustrade gave way, and dozens of people fell. Six of them were crushed and suffocated to death in the crush, including 16-year-old Benedetta Vitali. Her brother Francesco was informed of what had happened at the nightclub where his sister was and alerted his father, who went to the scene to look for her. Unfortunately, Benedetta was among the victims. Eight years later, only the young people responsible for using the spray have been convicted, while the trial against the club's managers and the officials in charge of security checks is still ongoing.
