Friday, September 12, 2025 Governor and Patriot Expedition Team Inspect Sugarcane Plantation Merauke - The Governor of South Papua, Apolo Safanpo, and the Patriot Expedition Team inspected a sugarcane plantation in Sermayam Village, Tanah Miring District, Merauke Regency, Friday (September 12, 2025). The Patriot Expedition Team consisted of university representatives, lecturers, and students. The university representatives included representatives from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), and Musamus University in Merauke. Upon arrival, Governor Apolo, accompanied by an employee and several officials, harvested sugarcane using a Tagrm Sumgarap sugarcane harvester. After harvesting, he discussed the harvest with the plantation manager. The group then continued their journey by car to the area ready for planting. The Governor and an employee planted the sugarcane using a John Deere harvester. The governor's entourage also boarded a car and inspected one of the cleared areas, as well as the heavy equipment being used. Governor Apolo and his entourage also monitored the sugarcane varieties planted in the nursery and held discussions with the managers. The sugarcane plantations in Merauke are part of the 2 million hectare National Strategic Project (PSN) for Sugarcane Plantations, which aims to support sugar and bioethanol self-sufficiency. This project is managed by PT Global Papua Abadi and other companies. To date, PT Global Papua Abadi and other companies managing sugarcane plantations have struggled to clear 18,000 hectares of land.
