From the historic Halfway Tavern—possibly visited by Abraham Lincoln—to quiet places like Flora, Clay City, and Noble, this leg of the trip highlights how the bypassing interstate left these towns frozen in time. I end the day in Lawrenceville, just shy of the Indiana border, staying at a $65 vintage motel that captures the spirit of old roadside America. The next morning, I cross the Wabash River into Indiana, sticking to the original path of US 50 as closely as possible.
