BELVER, Gavião, Portugal

Belver é uma vila e sede de uma freguesia do concelho do Gavião, distrito de Portalegre na região do Alentejo. O rei de Portugal D. Sancho I, por carta de 13 de Junho de 1194, fez doação à Ordem do Hospital de S. João de Jerusalém das terras denominadas “Guidintesta’, com a condição de na “Vila de Guidintesta’, edificarem um castelo, a que o próprio monarca impôs o nome de “Belver”, cuja interpretação é “Bela Vista”. O castelo foi fundado por Gualdim Pais, da Ordem dos Hospitalários. O Foral Novo atribuído pelo rei D. Manuel I, em 18 de Maio de 1518, instituiu o concelho de Belver. O concelho de Belver em 1836, foi extinto, devido a reorganização administrativa, tendo sido integrado em Mação e mais tarde no Gavião.
