What is critical thinking, and why is it so difficult to teach?

In this Voge Academy Talk, Matt Frawley and Nic Voge unpack what “critical thinking” means beyond the buzzword, why it’s often domain-specific (it doesn’t automatically “transfer” from one subject to another), and what actually helps people learn to think more clearly: surfacing assumptions, seeking coherence, modeling the thinking process, and developing the motivation to pursue truth. We also discuss: -Why “coverage” in education can block critical thinking -The difference between being told vs learning (agency matters) -How self-protection, authority, and fear of looking “wrong” inhibit real thinking -Why some students sense contradictions but can’t yet argue them well -Practical ways to build critical thinking at work or school (deep structure, framing, and intention) Subscribe for more weekly conversations on meaning, learning, self-worth, and building a deeper inner life. #criticalthinking #howtothink #liberalarts #metacognition #curiosity
