Santa Barbara - also spelled as Santa Bárbara - is a coastal town in California, the United States of America (USA). The city is known as the America's Riviera and has a mild Mediterranean climate. The region was inhabited by Chumash Indians but first discovered by European sailors in 1542. The first Spanish colonial settlement of the Franciscans was however in 1782 who built the Mission Santa Barbara. The local population mostly perished after having diseases such as smallpox against which they had no immunity. Santa Barbara has a population of 90,000. Some highlights of the city are the historical city centre, Mission Santa Barbara with the Capilla Chapel, the Clock Tower, the Peabody Stadium, Santa Barbara Creek and the West and East Beach.
