Out of the Closet: Nepal Supreme Court's Decision on the Third Gender | Documentary

We made this short documentary film in 2011, in the aftermath of The Supreme Court’s decision in 2007 instructing the government to amend existing laws that discriminated against the country’s sexual and gender minorities and to recognize them as the third gender, and not be forced to be categorized either as male or female against their wishes. In actual terms, however, the LGBTI community continued to face discrimination at various levels. Despite the Supreme Court order and the well-publicized precedence of the third gender having been accepted by some government bodies, many have not been able to secure the same recognition. This film, therefore, is an attempt to bring greater community awareness of the challenges the Third Gender Nepalis face.
