In this exclusive conversation with Filmfare, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali opened up about why themes of distance, longing, and loneliness frequently find their way into his stories. According to him, the things we love often come with the fear of losing them. He believes it is human nature to cherish what has slipped away, making memories and emotions even more precious with time. Talking about old-school romance, actor Vedang Raina said that while times have changed, the feeling of love remains universal. The logistics of relationships may be different today, but the essence and emotions of love are still the same. Vedang also described himself as being in a transitional phase of life. “I’m at a stage where a young man has just stepped out of college and is trying to understand who he is and what he can become,” he shared. Speaking about romance in the film, actress Sharvari Wagh revealed that she strongly believes in old-school love. She feels the relationship between Keenu and Jiya in the film is incredibly pure and heartfelt. “The kind of love shown in the film is rare to find today. We have tried to portray a romance set in a different era, but the emotions behind it are something everyone can relate to,” she said. Sharvari also praised Imtiaz Ali’s portrayal of women on screen. She noted that he has always written female characters with remarkable depth, exploring both their strength and vulnerability. According to her, the most fascinating aspect of his writing is the contradictions within his characters. “He never puts his characters into a box,” she said. Reflecting on today’s generation, Imtiaz observed that many young people struggle with loneliness. He feels that despite experiencing multiple relationships, many are still searching for something more meaningful and continue to seek genuine love. In his view, the younger generation is yearning for a kind of old-school romance that feels increasingly rare today. He added that it is possible to feel lonely even while being in a relationship. Imtiaz also believes that the definition of love evolves with age and changes as people grow. Talking about Diljit Dosanjh, Imtiaz described him as extremely simple yet incredibly sharp.
