Armutsbedroht und abgehängt? Wie sich Menschen aus der finanziellen Mangellage kämpfen wollen
According to current figures from the Federal Statistical Office, around 13 million people in Germany are at risk of poverty. But what does that mean, and how does this constant financial hardship affect their lives, their nutrition, and their mental health? The demand at the Kana soup kitchen in Dortmund has increased. A hot meal, fruit, coffee, and cake in a plastic bag: Alexander, along with the homeless and drug addicts, is in line for this food. The 30-year-old attends a school for sound engineering. He doesn't receive any student financial aid (BAföG). The school costs him €190 a month, which he scrapes together from his Hartz IV benefits. Despite a part-time job, his money usually only lasts until the middle of the month. He believes it's a misconception that no one in Germany goes hungry; he himself often finds himself facing an empty refrigerator. Alexander has a secondary school leaving certificate. Now he has a goal: to complete a good vocational training program. Stefanie (31) and her partner Patrick (34) are also struggling to make ends meet since everything has become more expensive. Stefanie is pregnant. The couple wants to leave the city as soon as possible. At a charity shop, they find a used crib and a baby shirt for one euro. Both would like to work, but not again for jobs far below the minimum wage, which they are offered as long-term unemployed.
