PHILIP GUSTON Laughter in the Dark, and Panel Discussion at HAUSER & WIRTH Part 1
James Klam, despite a daunting head cold, makes his way to the historic Philip Guston exhibition “Laughter in the Dark, Drawings from 1971 & 1975” and its attendant panel discussion. This event was organized with assistance from the Hauser & Wirth gallery, Musa Mayer (Philip Guston’s daughter), and Phong Bui of The Brooklyn Rail. The exhibition is the first time many of the nearly 200 drawings have been displayed in public and they are some of the most biting satirical caricatures of the 37th President of the United States: Richard Nixon produced by this highly recognized artist. The panel discussion is moderated by Phong Bui and includes: William Corbett, poet and essayist; Bob Mankoff, cartoon editor of The New Yorker; Irving Sandler, art historian and critic; Katy Siegel, senior programming and research curator at the Baltimore Museum of Art; and Lisa Yuskavage, artist. Because of the large files and long length of the discussion, this program has been divided into two parts. This program was recorded Tuesday 10 January 2017, at the Hauser & Wirth galleries 548 West 22nd Street in Chelsea
