I visited South Sudan to reconnect with an old friend - Akau, someone I met at a comedy festival in Rwanda almost 10 years ago. Most of what I knew about South Sudan came from two very different places: years of reading about the struggles of the world's newest nation, and years of watching Akau's life play out on social media. The two didn't match. One was crisis. The other was just... life - seemingly normal enough. I've been so curious how these two very different narratives can exist simultaneously.
