In second step the potassium manganate is oxidized to potassium permanganate either through the chemical oxidation or through electrolytic oxidation. KMnO4 is a deep purple black prism shape crystals, which are slightly soluble in cold water but highly soluble in hot water. On heating it decomposes to give potassium manganate and evolve oxygen gas. Potassium manganate on further heating decomposes to form potassium manganite (K2MnO3) with the evolution of oxygen gas. KMnO4 act as an oxidizing agent in basic, alkaline and acidic medium. #potassium permanganate preparation and properties
