In the 1960s to 1980s, Germany's trading partners were furious about our export surplus and accused Bonn of undervaluing the Deutsche Mark. The idea that the industrious Federal Republic of Germany produced goods more cheaply (accusing wage dumping!) and better was of no use to these envious critics.
