Explosionskatastrophe Mitholz 19. Dezember 1947 | Schweizer Armee - Dokumentation & Ursachenanalyse
The Mitholz explosion disaster on the night of December 19, 1947, in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland - a huge Swiss Army disaster - a documentation and root cause analysis. The explosion at Mitholz in 1947 caused multiple explosions in one of the largest ammunition depots of the Swiss Army with about 7,000 tons of ammunition, today known as the Mitholz explosion in the Kander Valley in the Bernese Oberland. The entire rock face was blown away, killing 9 people and devastating the entire village of Mitholz. The explosion was one of the most powerful non-nuclear explosions in the world. Boulders weighing several tons were hurled more than 400m away and can be found today on the meadows in the otherwise mostly flat valley. There were several underground storage tunnels which led away from the entrance in the direction of Blausee, what exactly is left of it nobody knows exactly. Until 2018, the residual risk was hushed up - now it came to light that there is a very real danger from the remaining explosives, still about 3,500 tons, and that these could also explode over the years. Therefore it was decided to dismantle this contaminated site from 2031. For this, however, a part of the village must be evacuated for at least 10 years and another solution must be found for the road and the railroad. Families will have to leave their houses that have been inhabited by them for generations, some beautiful old farmhouses will be demolished. Addendum 10.01.2024 - The first small remnants of ammunition were found and disposed of in the second half of 2023. Special drones are also being used that can locate ammunition down to a depth of 15m, but the woodland will first have to be cleared in 2024. The planned cluster drillings on the Fluh to get an impression of the type and nature of the rock have been delayed due to landslides.
