Ancient Origins (Roman Era): Béziers, known as Biterrae in Roman times, was a thriving town during the Roman Empire. It is one of the oldest cities in France, and its founding is traditionally attributed to the Greek hero Biterre. Archaeological remains, such as Roman baths and structures, can still be seen today. Roman History: Béziers was an important administrative center during the Roman period. It was known for its agricultural production, including wine, and for its strategic location along the route connecting the Mediterranean to the interior of France. 2. The Albigensian Crusade (1209): Béziers is infamous for its role in the Albigensian Crusade, a religious war initiated by the Catholic Church against the Cathars, a Christian sect that was considered heretical. In 1209, Béziers was besieged by the crusading army. The most notorious event was the Massacre of Béziers, in which, according to some accounts, as many as 20,000 people were killed, including civilians, Cathars, and Catholics.
