They were surprised to learn that I could also converse in Kannada, after my guide introduced me as a researcher from the United States who had come to Karnataka to learn about the Siddis. The Siddi dress like most rural Indians - the women wear saris and the men wear a shirt and lungi. Those in Karnataka speak Konkani and Kannada. The community has a mixed, creolised culture as far as food, music and spirituality is concerned. They also have a unique dance form called Dhamaal. Despite the glory they have brought to the nation, the Siddis have to battle racism on a daily basis, often being treated as outsiders in the country that they have given their everything for. The Siddis have now settled primarily in the states of Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. Siddi populations have existed since the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, and in Gujarat for almost a millennium. Many came over as migrants or slaves from east and south-east Africa before establishing themselves as permanent diaspora communities within India. The Siddis in Karnataka had chosen a life of isolation within the forests and had created their own community, including doctors, performers, and other occupational specialists. Between 40,000 and 50,000 Siddis currently live in India. Many Africans travelled to India as slaves and traders, but eventually settled down here to play an important role in India's history of kingdoms, conquests and wars. Siddis are basically non-vegetarians. Siddi tribes take locally available foods like tea, rice, tomato sambar, tur dal sambar in morning.
