LOOSE watercolour painting tutorial beginner
How can we loosen up our watercolour painting? So many people are chasing this, and understandably so, but first we need to pin down what it means. For me it is a watercolour with that more painterly feeling born out of brush marks and patches of paint which unite to give the impression of our subject. Whilst painting more freely and loosely seems to come with time, practice and confidence, it is also largely born out of how we look at and analyse our subject, and in turn how we interpret that into our painting. It is this which I talk about in this video; and for me it is about learning to see our subject has having one large shape which anchors the painting and brings it together, maybe a few medium size shapes too. These simple larger shapes hold the piece together and give us the freedom to loosen up elsewhere and really throw the paint around.
