Martha Graham Technique:: Male Solo

Lighting is stage lighting and dark for 1min 15 sec but this was an exceptional dancer...even in minimal light the movement comes through. Dancer: Philip Salvatore (Martha Graham Dance Company), Music: Ben Carriel (Paul Winter Consort), Choreography: Phyllis Gutelius (Martha Graham Dance Company). Filmed at Juilliard 1979 by George Lamboy. Originally commissioned for Christopher Yeatman. 4 minute excerpt from "When a Lion Dream." Parts 1 and 2 (The Dream) are excerpted. Part 3 (The Awakening) is not shown. It was not unusual for Graham to send a dancer to the zoo to observe an animal as part of their preparation for a role. The weight, power, and unique movement quality of a big cat can be studied in a zoo but what happens to any animals persona after years in a cage?
