Tito Vasconcelos: el cabaret como trinchera de libertad y humor político

From the stages of Cabaretito to university forums, Tito Vasconcelos has made art an act of resistance. In an intimate conversation, the actor and activist recalls the years when opening a diverse space was a gesture of rebellion: Cabaretito, founded in 1998 with his partner David Rangel, was more than a bar; it was a declaration of freedom. He recalls his relationship with Luis González de Alba and the cultural encounters at “El Taller,” where activism and identity merged in debates about visibility and rights. A pioneer in the creation of Y sin embargo se mueve (Y Yet They Move), the first coming-out show sponsored by UNAM, Vasconcelos faced criticism but maintained his conviction: art should be free or not exist. He speaks of his friendship with Carlos Monsiváis and Nancy Cárdenas, with whom he shared ideological affinities, and champions humor as a political and healing tool. “Politicians hate humor because it exposes them,” he says ironically.
