The clock struck ten, but Tam ne’er cared, Another pint, another dared, Till every tale grew taller still, And every glass another fill. At last he rose, a staggered sway, The moon was hid, the night was grey, His mare, auld Meg, stood patient there, To bear him home through midnight air. The wind was sharp, the rain did lash, Through clarty road and puddle’s splash, But Tam sang loud, with drunken cheer, The storm could scarce out-roar his ear. Past kirk and graveyard lone he sped, Where restless spirits wail the dead, And through the gloom a glimmer shone, From Alloway’s auld haunted stone. Tam drew in reins, his heart did race, Yet stepped ahead to see the place, And there! within, by candle’s spark, The witches danced in hall sae dark! Round and round in whirling flight, They reeled and capered through the night, The Devil played the pipes wi’ glee, A wilder reel you’d never see! And there, among that devil’s flock, A lass in short skirt cut the shock — Her sark was scant, her beauty bared, Tam’s drunken heart was quickly snared! Ride, Tam, ride, the night’s in flame, The hounds of hell are on your name, The witches screech, the Devil’s near, Your only hope’s the Doon Bridge clear! Hoof on road, the mud was flying, Rain like spears and wind was crying, Meg’s heart drummed and Tam leaned low, Through the dark they dared to go. Closer still the witches screamed, Claws outstretched, their red eyes gleamed, Bridge ahead! The Doon’s black sweep — One last leap, one desperate leap! Up she sprang! The arch they cleared, A hand near caught the tail she reared, But only hair was left behind, While Tam laughed loud, half out his mind. So mind, my friends, if drink you take, Beware the road by haunted stake, And keep your mare both fleet and stark, Or rue the cry — Weel done, Cutty-sark! O Meg, my lass, we’ve won the night, The Doon now guards us from their sight, The storm still moans, but danger’s passed, We’re homeward bound and safe at last.
