THE PILOT WHO GAVE AWAY GERMANY'S BEST FIGHTER AND CHANGED THE AIR WAR OVER BRITAIN On 23 June 1942, a German Luftwaffe pilot performed a victory roll over an airfield he thought was in France and landed his aircraft. He was in Wales. Oberleutnant Armin Faber had mistaken the Bristol Channel for the English Channel during a dogfight, flown north into Britain, and delivered Germany's most advanced fighter — the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 — intact to the RAF. It was the only Fw 190 fighter captured intact by the Allies during the entire war. The RAF had it at Farnborough within days. Within ten days they had established its weaknesses, flown it in mock combat against the new Spitfire Mk. IX, and begun rebuilding their air superiority over the Channel.
