The German Who Discovered South Africa's Riches: Hans Merensky

Series: Lost History Files Episode: The German Who Discovered South Africa's Riches: Hans Merensky Born on African soil and shaped by two worlds, Dr Hans Merensky lived a life defined by curiosity, catastrophe, and reinvention. From his childhood at a remote mission station in the Transvaal to the lecture halls of Berlin, Merensky learned early how to read the land. That rare ability would guide him through war, financial ruin, internment, and illness — and ultimately lead to some of the greatest mineral discoveries in history. This documentary tells the remarkable story of the man behind the Merensky Reef, the world’s largest platinum deposit, as well as his role in South Africa’s diamond rushes, goldfields, chrome seams, vermiculite mines, and phosphate discoveries. Yet Merensky’s story is not only one of geology and fortune. It is also a story of failure, humility, discipline, and moral choice. After earning and losing fortunes, Merensky turned his back on speculation and devoted his later life to conservation, sustainable agriculture, and philanthropy, building the legendary Westfalia Estate and securing a legacy that still shapes South Africa today through forestry, farming, education, and research. Scientist. Miner. Farmer. Benefactor. A German whose heart belonged to South Africa. A man who listened carefully to the land — and gave back more than he took. This is the story of Hans Merensky, ‘the wizard geologist’. My thanks to the Hans Merensky Legacy Foundation for granting me permission to include the photos of Merensky as a child, a young man, and on his Westfalia estate. The opening portrait of Hans Merensky is courtesy of South African History Online; the internment camp image is ‘Herbert von Rapacki-Warnia im britischen Internierungslager Fort Napier in Pietermaritzburg/Südafrika – 1918’, Europeana 1914-1918, Europe - CC BY-SA.
