But then, at the latest when the scales come up, the guilt sets in, and we start wondering if we're helplessly at the mercy of these cravings! Which naturally raises the question: Do these cravings really matter that much? Are they even particularly harmful to our health? The good news is that today I can show you how to avoid 90% of these cravings, and in such a way that you won't even notice you're missing out. Cravings are unavoidable, but they can be managed. Almost everyone experiences cravings for sweets or unhealthy foods. However, these cravings aren't a genuine need, because our survival in these situations certainly doesn't depend on a chocolate bar or a tub of ice cream. Nevertheless, our bodies send us unmistakable signals. Often, we can't help it at that moment; physiologically, hormonally, our bodies are simply screaming for something "delicious." We have, to some extent, developed and conditioned our bodies—that is, our 1) metabolism, 2) hormonal balance, and 3) neurotransmitters in the brain—in this direction. But is it too late now? Cravings are not hunger. Our body's feeling of hunger is a learned reflex that we acquired through evolution to ensure an adequate food supply. While this was certainly useful in the past, nowadays the overabundance of food is more of a problem. Nevertheless, we should take a brief look at this feeling of hunger, because it reveals a great deal about the causes of cravings. Hunger is a reaction of our central nervous system and other processes in the digestive system. Our body uses glycogen as a short-term energy reserve and draws on it first after meals before tapping into our other reserves. Cravings: Why We Become Greedy While eating an apple or a steak can cause a moderate release of dopamine, eating a large sundae is so incredibly rewarding that it releases an enormous amount of dopamine. If you repeatedly do something that releases dopamine in the reward system, the dopamine receptors can begin to downregulate. To maintain balance when dopamine levels are too high, your brain starts removing dopamine receptors. Therefore, if you have fewer dopamine receptors, you logically need more dopamine to achieve the same effect. This is called tolerance. Furthermore, if you have fewer dopamine receptors, you will have lower dopamine activity. You'll start feeling unhappy if you don't get a chocolate bar, junk food, or similar treat for a few days to release new dopamine. This is called withdrawal.
