Deanston 18 Year Old. Video 80: It's still affordable

Video 80: This is the brown label/ box version of the core range Deanston 18 year old, released in 2015. There is a more recent 18 year old with a white label & white cylinder cask box. My research tells me that they are finished different and overall, different whiskies. The brown label version is matured in ex-bourbon hogsheads before being finished in 1st fill ex-bourbon barrels. It’s bottled at the Deanston minimum of 46.3% ABV, with their standard non chill filtering and no colour added. This Deanston Eighteen is different to the other Deanston bottlings including the recent Twelve Year Old that I reviewed. For you who are looking for Sherry Bombs, this whisky is not finished in Sherry casks. It has an old fashion whisky taste. The sweetness as well as the fruity and spicy notes rely on a good 1st fill bourbon cask finish and of course the barley. Deanston is an underrated distillery even though the buildings that house the distillery have a very interesting and colourful past and are protected as a national historic site. Their whiskies seem to have been under the radar due to the fact that in the past more than 85% of the whisky went into blends. The price of their whiskies are still affordable but some are not as easy to find like the Eighteen Year Old. Well I took the risk and paid under $160 for the Eighteen so how does this whisky rate?
