What was Odysseus's world really like? In this video, I analyze the trailer for Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" from a historical and archaeological perspective. I examine the costumes, helmets, armor, swords, spears, bows, and architecture visible in the trailer. The action of "The Odyssey" takes place at the end of the Bronze Age, around 1200 BCE. This was a time of crisis for the Mycenaean world, the fall of the Hittite state, the invasions of the Sea Peoples, and the collapse of many civilizations in the eastern Mediterranean. Did Nolan truly recreate this era? Do the film's warriors resemble Mycenaeans, or rather Greeks from a much later period? I examine, among other things, whether helmets resembling Attic and Chalcidian armor are appropriate for Odysseus's era, whether anatomical leather armor has a historical basis, and why swords dominate the screen when the Mycenaean warrior's primary weapon was the spear.
