Life insurance, home insurance, business insurance, and similar insurance policies that are voluntary and intended to protect one's own property are haram (forbidden). This is because they are most similar to gambling contracts in Islam. What is a gambling contract? A gambling contract is a mutual agreement. You can give one and get a thousand, right? You can give a thousand and get nothing. Insurance is the same way. You insure your house. The first installment is over, and the house burns down, and you get $200,000. It's just like gambling. You can invest money for a lifetime, but if the house burns down, you might get nothing. If nothing happens to the house, you might get nothing. Therefore, this is a contract that is forbidden. 2. Things that the system makes obligatory on people and from which there's no escape, like vehicle insurance. These are also permissible due to lineage. In other words, when there's an alternative, it ceases to be permissible, but when there's no alternative, it falls under the scope of what's permissible due to necessity. 3. There's social insurance. So, let's say you work at a workplace and deposit three hundred million every month. This is the most controversial, and there's no disagreement on the previous two. All reasonable people agree. There's significant disagreement among scholars regarding workplace insurance, and the prevailing view is that it's permissible. Because it somewhat alleviates the oppression inflicted on people by the capitalist system. For example, is there insurance in Islam? There's no insurance in Islam. There's no insurance in Islam. But there's no such thing in the capitalist system, so what will this man do after he turns sixty, son? He's not a child. There's no Islam, no one knows anyone's rights, and the state doesn't interfere. Insurance is, so to speak, a relief tool to alleviate the oppression inflicted upon people by the capitalist system.
