Originally an independent municipality between 1881 and 1922, often dubbed the "Žižkov People's Republic," it was traditionally a gritty, working-class neighbourhood with a strong free-spirited identity. The district was named after the famous Hussite military leader Jan Žižka, who won a decisive victory on nearby Vítkov Hill in 1420. Today, Vítkov Hill is topped by the monumental National Memorial and features the third-largest bronze equestrian statue in the world. The district's architecture is dominated by the futuristic Žižkov Television Tower. Constructed between 1985 and 1992, the 216-meter structure is the tallest building in Prague and remains a controversial landmark, featuring a panoramic bar and restaurant. Another key cultural landmark is the New Jewish Cemetery, established in 1890, which serves as the final resting place for legendary author Franz Kafka, known for The Trial and The Metamorphosis. At the heart of the area lies Jiřího z Poděbrad Square, home to the unique modern Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord.
