Title: Liquid Biopsy. Sample Types Description: Description of the different types of biological samples that correspond to the concept of liquid biopsy. The criteria for selecting one type of sample or another are discussed. Jantus Lewintre, E. (2021). Liquid Biopsy. Sample Types. http://hdl.handle.net/10251/168376 Automatic description: This video explains the concept of liquid biopsy and its relevance in the clinical setting. Liquid biopsy refers to the analysis of biomarkers in various biological fluids to evaluate diverse analytical matrices, such as DNA, RNA, proteins, metabolites, lipids, and tumor cells. This technique allows for capturing the heterogeneity of tumors and real-time monitoring of tumor progression, due to its minimally invasive nature. The types of information that liquid biopsies can provide are mentioned, including diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment selection based on predictive biomarkers. The usefulness of these samples for monitoring treatment response in different types of cancer is also highlighted. It is emphasized that the selection of the liquid biopsy sample depends on the type of tumor and can be saliva, pleural fluid, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, urine, or, more commonly, peripheral blood. In blood, both plasma can be analyzed to detect elements such as tumor DNA or extracellular vesicles, and the cellular fraction can be analyzed to examine circulating tumor cells or other cellular elements. The video concludes by highlighting the importance of liquid biopsies for obtaining valuable information at different stages of the disease and their role in clinical practice for the analysis of biomarkers that influence therapeutic decision-making.
