In the deep sea off the East Coast of Korea, fishermen chase a dream buried nearly 2,000 meters underwater—red snow crabs (hongge), known as the hidden jewels of the East Sea. At Ganggu Port in Yeongdeok, Gyeongbuk Province—famous for its crabs—fishing vessels like the Seong Chun-ho set out for grueling 4- to 7-day expeditions. The crew endures 24-hour rotating shifts, rough seas, and punishing physical labor to haul in massive traps from the dark seafloor. Each trap must be baited, set, retrieved, and reset up to six times a day—requiring strength, precision, and flawless teamwork. The red snow crabs, though visually similar to snow crabs, live in drastically deeper waters, demanding long-range expeditions and heavy-duty equipment. Even smaller vessels like the Daebok-ho use gillnets to chase them along the coastal waters of Sokcho, working tirelessly during the legal fishing window from December to May. After returning to port, the crabs are sorted—some frozen for processing, others sold live at auction. But the price is never guaranteed. Despite days of hardship, the final market rate can bring either relief or heartbreak. Yet these men return to sea, braving storms, sleepless nights, and crashing waves, driven by pride, perseverance, and the hope of a full haul.
