Venerable Sumanassara personally answered questions and concerns sent via email. (Recorded at Gotami Vihara on July 24, 2025) Japanese subtitles: Madoka Kikuchi @ Subtitle Production Team Q: Parenting Advice (Woman in her 40s with a 9-year-old son) Hello. I recently came to you for advice about my 9-year-old son's school refusal. After listening to your advice, I've been trying to approach everything, both parenting and work, with a smile and a positive attitude. My child has been going to school recently! By making a conscious effort to "smile, stay smiling," no matter what happens, even when unpleasant things happen, I've gradually found myself able to experience moments of inner peace. I'm truly grateful. Thank you so much. I'd appreciate it if you could allow me to ask you two questions about the following points. Thank you in advance. (Question 1) Is it good or bad to imagine the worst-case scenario? I try to keep a smile on my face at all times, but when I feel anxious and unsettled, I find myself imagining the worst-case scenario and telling myself, "If that happens, I won't get angry." I heard from an elder that fantasizing is not good. Would this method be okay to suppress feelings of anxiety and anger? (Question 2) About how to spend your weekends with your child (age 9) On weekends, my child says things like, "Why is the vacation so short?" and "I don't want to go to school tomorrow." I try to be as cheerful as possible and encourage him, but is this the right way to interact with him? (I used to spend a lot of time outside, but now (since I moved) I spend most of my time at home playing games and watching YouTube, which is making me irritable.) ■Venerable Sumanasara's Buddhist Sermons Twitter / jtba_talk ■Japan Theravada Buddhist Association Twitter / jtba_info ■STORES.JP Early Buddhist Sermons to Nurture the Mind Download content related to Theravada Buddhism (early Buddhism, Theravada Buddhism), including data on Venerable Sumanasara's sermons, is available for purchase. https://j-theravada.stores.jp/ ■Venerable Sumanasara's Profile Venerable Alubomulle Sumanasara Thero Venerable Theravada Buddhist (Theravada) Buddhism.
