A 2017 Ukrainian historical film by Zaza Buadze, based on the novel of the same name by Andriy Kokotyukha. The film was released in Ukraine on August 24, 2017. In August 2017, the film was one of the possible contenders for Ukraine's submission to the 90th Academy Awards held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the Best Foreign Language Film category, but ultimately failed to be selected as Ukraine's submission. The film "Red" centers on the dramatic story of two Ukrainians with opposing political views. The protagonist, Danylo Krasny, a UPA commander, ends up in a Soviet political prison camp, where he meets former Soviet pilot Viktor Gurov. Despite the initial ideological conflict between the rebel and the Soviet officer, under the inhumane conditions of forced labor, they realize they share a common homeland. While in the camp, the heroes face brutal repression from the camp authorities, who attempt to break the spirit of the Ukrainian prisoners. Krasny, defying the system, begins organizing resistance, recruiting other political prisoners. The film culminates in a desperate attempt to organize a large-scale uprising against the camp administration in hopes of achieving long-awaited freedom.
