Why This 'Ugly' Turkish 4x4 Became The Most Exported MRAP Britain Never Managed To Build

The "clumsy" Ejder Yalçın is the Turkish 4x4 MRAP that survived IED ambushes on the Syrian border and across the Sahel, then out-sold nearly every Western rival and reached dozens of armies Britain never fielded one of. Built by Nurol Makina, the Ejder Yalçın is a mine-resistant armored vehicle designed to keep its crew alive where lighter trucks were being torn apart. A V-shaped hull, blast-attenuating seats and NATO STANAG protection shield the men inside from mines and roadside bombs. Powered by a Cummins diesel and configured as an armored personnel carrier for up to eleven troops, it became one of the most combat-proven 4x4 MRAPs of the modern era. More than one thousand Ejder Yalçıns have been built, in service with over ten countries including Turkey, Hungary, Qatar, Uzbekistan, Chad and Tunisia. The twist Britain never saw coming: Nurol now builds the vehicle in the UK, at Leamington Spa, as the "Dragon" for the British Army's Land Mobility Programme to replace the ageing Mastiff, Ridgback and Wolfhound fleet.
