2006: 🏈 Refugio vs Van Vleck September 1, 2006: Refugio 31, Van Vleck 8 Refugio Opens Season With Win Over Van Vleck Victoria Advocate September 2, 2006 The Refugio Bobcats rolled up over 300 yards rushing and struck from long distance twice in toppling Van Vleck 31-8 in the season opener for both teams. Running back Carl Swain led the attack with 129 yards on only 8 carries, and quarterback Garrett Murphy added 94 yards to 10 carries and two scores. The Bobcats scored first when a Leopard punt went straight up and was grabbed at the 2-yard line by Refugio’s Collin Avery who walked into the end zone. The kick failed and Refugio was on top 6-0 with 5:10 left in the first quarter. The Bobcats would strike again late in the quarter when Murphy scored from 3 yards out. The run for two failed. Swain scored his first touchdown in the second quarter from 24 yards out with 8:56 left in the half. The pass for two was no good, and Refugio led 18-0 at halftime. The Bobcats struck quickly to start the second half, when Murphy eluded a number of Leopard tacklers who had him cornered in the backfield and scampered 65 yards to paydirt with 11:37 remained in the third quarter. The kick again failed, and Refugio led 24-0. Van Vleck got on the scoreboard with 9:13 left in the third quarter when Kenyon Howell scored on a 35-yard run. Howell ran in the two-point conversion and Refugio’s lead was cut to 24-8. Swain got loose again as the third quarter was winding down, this time scoring from 57 yards out. Malcolm Whitmire added the point after. Collin Avery added to the Bobcat rushing total with 70 yards on 6 carries. Murphy only passed 5 times, completing two for 37 yards. Ben Preston had an interception for a stingy Refugio defense that held the Leopards to 126 yards on the ground and 16 through the air. Howell led Van Vleck with 63 yards rushing.
