[Star Fox Remake] Expert Hard Route No Restarts CLEAR (Score: 1,441) [CC Commentary]
I honestly didn't expect much of this Remake, but now that I got the game... It still doesn't convince me that Star Fox 64 in any form is better than Star Fox Zero! But assuming you don't mind about Remakes and stuff, heck, if you find entertainment in comparisons, Star Fox Remake is a pleasant package. I love it! The most notable glow up is the cutscenes. The cutscenes are surprisingly short and sweet. Helpful as gameplay briefings too. Modern stuff done right, I guess. Think of it like Ace Combat? Some story changes is less favorable, but it is mostly identical and even cooler than the original. But that's not my job as a channel here. As I've iterated in my demo video before, for better and for worse it's Star Fox 64 in widescreen 60 FPS, modernized visually. And I mean including the image clarity (yellow neon lights, anyone?). To me, it's mostly for the better! It even makes me appreciate Star Fox 64 even more. When playing the original in the NSO, felt like the game was constrained by the 30 FPS and object culling. This is still an easy game to survive with almost exact same enemy placements, animation timings, behaviors and extend counts. Pretty scary! Did they get the source code? So what's the implication of the boosted tech? Easier scoring! Design-wise it doesn't have to do much and it already feels much better to play! Though funny that they don't raise the medal requirements at all to compensate this, lol. Because things run at silky smooth 60 FPS and no culling, everything registers easily especially lock on. The lock on range got boosted so ridiculously it's especially notable in Sector Z and you get to destroy the far-away supply containers with ease! These are stuff that are hard to see in the original. Heck, did anyone knew about this? I didn't! While around 95% of the game is scarily true to the original in terms of stage design, there are differences. Notably: Some after-cutscene spawn points are a miss, at least slightly, from what I've heard. Personally, doesn't make the game in vacuum worse, or better. Feels like Gorgon's whip attack has much less telegraph period than the original. Or was it due to the slowdown in the original? The remake doesn't replicate any slowdown, but it is a remake, so not complaining. The TLB Andross here is easier for the better! In short, they removed the action where Andross tails you. I hate this because the solution is while easy to replicate, it's obtuse and boring to execute. They also make him shoot in Normal mode in his 1st phase! But that makes the difference between his Normal and Expert mode negligible. Talk about faithful to a fault. It helps that the controls are identical to the Star Fox 64 original. If you've played it on the NSO, aside of some button assignment difference, the analog stick behaviors is scarily identical. This analog stick subtle precision just feels much, much better in 60 FPS, you know? If there is one major difference I hate the most, is the lack of GREAT! screen. Only this Remake don't have it. The 3DS remake had it. Sheesh. I am happy with what I got, much more than I initially thought! But I still find it hard to convince people that disdains remakes in general. If you've never played the original before or the 3DS version, this is a MUST! Otherwise, uh, up to you. I can't convince you to not hate remakes... #stg #shmup #nintendoswitch2
