Why Do We Make Art - An Exercise and Reflection onWhy We Create - Easy Painting

Hi everybody. In today’s lesson we slow things down and return to something simple and approachable. We will paint a series of stylised cats using a basic grid structure and a limited colour palette. This exercise is designed especially for beginners and for anyone who enjoys painting but has never had formal art training. Using a simple grid, we explore how complex subjects can be broken down into clear and manageable shapes. With this method, a single structure can become many different compositions. In this video I demonstrate how the same grid can lead to several different cats, each with its own personality and balance. The painting process itself is intentionally simple. Only two main colour mixes are used. A darker mix made from black, blue, and burnt umber, and a lighter mix created by combining the same colours with white. This limited palette helps unify the compositions while keeping the focus on shape, rhythm, and visual storytelling. Experimentation is always part of the process. If you enjoy simple painting exercises, reflective discussions about art, and approachable lessons designed for beginners, you are very welcome here. Keep on practicing, and thank you for joining us.
