It's no secret that the Predator franchise has largely lost its way. With the exception of maybe Predator 2, the Predator sequels have been middling to bad and a lot of it has to do with the fact that the Predator movies have forgotten what made the Predator scary in the first place. Predator isn't scary because of the creature, his backstory, the lore, and WHY he's hunting Arnold Schwarzenegger and his crew; Predator is scary because it represents our worst nightmare, a fear that we are NOT the dominant species, we are NOT the apex predator. It's a reflection to the uglier side of humanity and like any great movie monster isn't really there to be the lead character, isn't there to take center stage and hog the spotlight; it's there to tell us more about our ACTUAL characters and ourselves. When your movie monster stops becoming a movie monster and the filmmakers start to humanize it, it becomes less scary. That's why the predator movies aren't scary anymore...until PREY. The new Predator prequel movie on Hulu, Prey is the best predator sequel and Prey is the best predator movie because it goes back to basics, focuses on the hunt and humanity's fear of being hunted by a force of nature who kills for sport just like we do. Dan Trachtenberg managed to rediscover the genius of the Predator franchise in what is a brutal coming of age story stunningly shot by Jeff Cutter, and led by the powerful Amber Midthunder.
