I Was Taught Tarot Was Evil. Then I Used It Again.

I grew up being taught that tarot cards were dangerous, demonic, and spiritually forbidden. But I also had a lifelong love of cards, symbols, artwork, mystery, and the strange feeling that some objects seem to carry meaning beyond themselves. In this episode of Devils Advocates Beyond, I’m talking about my personal journey with tarot: my Christian upbringing, the fear I was conditioned to feel around the cards, the beautiful deck I felt drawn to in high school, and the experience that felt so magical at the time that it scared me into putting tarot away for years. Years later, after my spiritual path changed, I came back to tarot with a different question. What if the cards are not “evil”? What if they are a way to speak with the subconscious, intuition, symbolic imagination, or maybe even something non-physical, depending on how you understand reality? I’m not here to tell you what tarot absolutely is. I’m here to explore what it has done for me, what I’ve learned through using it, and how someone might approach tarot with curiosity, caution, and an open mind without surrendering their ability to think critically.
