Mostly he was painting directly on the spot sur le motif: here he is drawing in felt-tip pen on a photograph of the unfinished painting, to then translate these observations of the scene into paint back in the studio, an ingenious solution, to avoid some of the heavy lifting. - Filmed over three years with unprecedented access, A Bigger Picture captures Britain’s most beloved painter at work.
