Drone Railfanning: Flying High over Spring City and West Sevier

A collection of aerial catches during the second full week of June 2016. The Geezer Guys Rail Pics Facebook group had our summer gathering at Spring City, TN on Saturday June 18, 2016. This busy stretch of the CNO&TP 3rd District features a beautifully maintained Southern Railway Depot, a quaint small town atmosphere, and high-speed NS train running! First up is NS 56G coming south with grain loads. It's always amazing to see such a heavy train traveling so fast... Next is 67E going north with ethanol empties. Third, we see 275 speeding south with brand new automobile loads, destined for markets further south. Last catch is a bonus. We see 134 slowly creeping into the west end of John Sevier Yard in Knoxville, TN. Built by the Southern Railway in the mid-1920's, this vast facility was once the pride of the Southern (and later NS) system, and often employed the latest technology available to help improve efficiency. But due to the downturn in traffic levels and overall slump in the economy, in early 2016, NS severely reduced operations at Sevier. This resulted in the layoff of over 100 workers, and closure of the hump yard, and diesel servicing facility. Sadly, the yard is now used mainly for car storage, and as a crew change location.
