The Trailhead starts in Mount Hood National Forest at Elk Meadows Trailhead aka Sahale Falls Trail 667C and quickly converges to Elk Meadows Trail 645, crosses Clark Creek over a Wooden Foot Bridge, crosses Newton Creek over a Log Crossing (CAUTION - THE MOST DANGEROUS PART OF THIS HIKE), ascends Forest Switchbacks (up around ~500 FT in 0.6 Miles) ultimately to the Elk Meadows Zone. PLEASE NOTE: when you first get to the Loop Trail Sign around Elk Meadows Zone, there is a Direct Trail that takes you to the Meadow hidden behind some Blowdowns. If you just get on the Loop you will never get closer to the actual Elk Meadows Shelter, learn from my experience. :) On the East side of the Loop is two designated Backcountry Campsites, the second one (coming from Newton Creek) is the higher quality of the two, with a Grand Viewpoint of Elk Meadows adjacent to it. The North Side of the Loop has some high quality Cold Spring Creek Log Crossings and Wildflowers. The weather was Overcast with some rain sprinkles throughout the day and an ethereal fog that partially obscured Mount Hood. There were No Mosquitoes the entire Hike except at both the Backcountry Campsites - mosquitoes are no dummies and go where they can get a meal! Overall I highly recommend this as a PREMIUM Hike in the SE Quadrant of the Mount Hood Wilderness Area. A much shorter version would be just to stop @ Newton Creek and cut the distance in about half and avoid the Log Crossing.
