Making a Japanese Hand Plane | Kanna Plane Fail Video | Japanese Woodworking
#japanesewoodworking #japanesehandplane #kannaplane I tried, I gave it a fair amount of blood, sweat, and tears, but at the end of the day it was a failure. But my failure is your gain with this fail video on how to make a Japanese hand plane in the traditional way. Since I've gotten into Japanese woodworking and Japanese carpentry, a Japanese hand plane build has been on my to-do list. I spent a ton of time doing research on how to make a kanna, a wooden plane and perhaps the most deceptively simple, yet tricky Japanese woodworking tools. These planes appear much later in history than their western counterparts, and in this video I specifically spend the bulk of time showing how to make a kanna dai. In my opinion, the kanna plane is a proving ground for hand tool woodworkers. This is not made through lamination, but precision chiseling to make a wooden plane from a single block of wood. This fail blog isn't all for naught though, you'll get the basic measurements, understanding of how to set up a Japanese plane, and the layout for proper Japanese plane setup. How to setup a hand plane, especially when it only consists of an iron and wooden body is incredibly important, and knowing how to set up a Japanese plane, with it's chip breaker free assembly, is vital information for the use and construction of this wooden hand plane. Ultimately, I ended up with not only issues with making the perfect body, but discovered some unavoidable defects in the plane iron. With that being said, this video on how to make a Japanese plane wasn't a complete loss as I was still able to use the kanna plane and pull some wood shavings for you. It's my earnest hope, that the basic principles in this video help you understand how to make a Japanese wood plane and inspire you to want to know how to make a kanna plane and ultimately make your own.
