Why There’s No Pan-Turkic Empire

The Turkic world is more connected than ever — but that does not mean a Pan-Turkic empire is emerging. Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan have built a stronger Organization of Turkic States. Defense ties are growing. Turkish drones are being produced in Kazakhstan. Common alphabet projects, investment funds, and cultural platforms are expanding. But the limits are just as important as the momentum. In this explainer, Turan Research Center breaks down the history of Pan-Turkism and Turanism, why they are not the same thing, how Erdogan adopted Pan-Turkic language, and why Central Asian states still refuse to turn Turkic cooperation into a military bloc or Turkish-led geopolitical project. This video features exclusive interviews with Hay Eytan Cohen Yanarocak, Adjunct Fellow at the Turan Research Center; Rafael Sattarov, independent political scientist; and Eldar Namazov, former advisor to the president of Azerbaijan.
