A few subtle tweaks keep pace with the times and continue to challenge its long-time rivals: from the Audi Q3 to the Jaguar E-Pace, from the Volvo XC40 to the all-Italian Alfa Romeo Tonale. Just to spice up the instrumental test, we chose to test it on our track in the very tempting 35 AMG variant, with the exuberant 306 hp 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine, paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. We found ourselves with a little "sleeper" in our hands, or, to put it in Italian, a "wolf in sheep's clothing." Indeed, unlike other AMG models, the GLA remains understated and elegant—perhaps even too much so—and never overdone. The mechanicals, however, are top-notch and allow this small SUV to deliver exhilarating performance and great efficiency on the curves, provided you sacrifice a little comfort for everyday driving. The baby AMG, despite being able to rely only on 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, has managed to outperform its competitors with plug-in engines, equipped with powerful electric traction motors, and in some cases even threaten some 100% electric competitors.
