But the transition is raising difficult questions for ordinary motorists. Flex-fuel vehicles cost significantly more than conventional models, fuel efficiency often declines with higher ethanol blends, and millions of older vehicles remain unprepared for the shift. As policymakers accelerate the roadmap, consumers are asking a simple question: who bears the cost of this transition? Ethanol contains less energy per litre than conventional petrol, meaning higher blends can reduce vehicle range and mileage.
