A 7-Year-Old’s Drone Mission Near Melba, Idaho 🚁🌄

On May 29th, my 7-year-old grandson asked if I would take him out to make a drone video — and honestly, that alone made the whole evening worth it. 👦🚁 We ended up just south of Melba, Idaho, a small farming community I’ve driven near plenty of times but rarely actually visit. It wasn’t his first choice for a drone spot, but once the drone lifted off and the evening light hit the green fields, rolling hills, and distant Snake River country, it turned into one of those unexpected Idaho surprises. 🌾🌄 From the takeoff point, the drone heads south toward Guffey Butte, Celebration Park, and the Snake River Canyon. It doesn’t quite make it all the way to the river, but it gets close enough to show the beautiful mix of farmland, desert hills, basalt country, and that classic southwest Idaho evening sky. 🏞️🌅 This area has a lot more story than it first appears. Nearby Celebration Park, along the Snake River, is Idaho’s only archaeological park and is known for ancient petroglyphs carved into basalt boulders left behind by the Bonneville Flood. Some of those rock carvings are estimated to be thousands of years old. The historic Guffey Railroad Bridge, built in 1897, also stands in this area as a reminder of the mining and railroad history that once connected the Owyhees with the Treasure Valley. 🪨⛰️ But for me, this flight was really about something simpler: a grandson wanting to spend time with his grandpa, a drone in the air, and a place that turned out to be far more beautiful than expected. ❤️ Sometimes the best little adventures are the ones you almost don’t take.
