The special needs school in Mettmann is for children and teenagers who, due to learning difficulties, behavioral problems, or family circumstances, would be unable to graduate from another school. Many of them have already experienced a great deal of hardship in their young lives. Precisely for this reason, they want to do good for people who, like them, need the help of others. A unique feature of the school is its student-run company, which functions like a real business. It has different departments, including the cafeteria. Here, they cook up a storm, preparing buffets for weddings and birthday parties. But that's not all: Once a week, the students cook for the "Mettmann Food Bank," an initiative of the Diakonie Mettmann (a social welfare organization), preparing hot meals and distributing them to people in need. The professional chefs Ralf Zacherl, Martin Baudrexel, and Stefan Marquard will support the students for two days, exchange ideas with them, and undoubtedly learn a great deal themselves in the process—both about the daily work of the food bank and about the students' personal stories.
