Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman invited mothers, students, and other participants to directly calculate farmers' incomes while discussing the issue of high rice prices. On that occasion, Amran requested that the calculations be conducted openly in public to avoid any suspicion of data manipulation. Amran used the national average farmer's land area of ​​0.5 hectares with a productivity of around 5.3 tons per hectare. From this simulation, the harvest yield was multiplied by the price of unhusked rice of Rp 6,500 per kilogram, then 50 percent was deducted from operational costs, and divided by the planting period of approximately four months. The calculation showed that farmers' income was only around Rp 17,000 per person per day after dividing by family needs. This figure was then compared to daily cigarette expenses and bricklayer wages, which were considered much higher than farmers' incomes. Amran emphasized that the public needs to understand this situation when discussing rice prices on the market. He stated that farmers support hundreds of millions of Indonesians, yet their income remains very low compared to their workload and daily living expenses.
